How to get a PA Learner's Permit

 

1) Prepare for the learner's permit test

2) Schedule a physical examination with your health care provider

3) Complete a ​Non-Commercial Learner's Permit Application

  • your health care provider must complete the appropriate sections on the back

4) Go to the DMV to take your permit test

  • on or any day after your 16th birthday

  • check PennDot for hours of operation

5) Items to take with you to the DMV

  • completed Non-Commercial Learner's Permit Application

  • parent or guardian with ID

  • proof of your birthday/identification

    • social security card

    • birth certificate

  • debit/credit card, check, or money order for $35.50 (no cash)

6) When you pass and receive your PA learner's permit

  • schedule one-to-one driving lessons with DriveErie, LLC

  • begin practice driving

    • 65 hours of supervised driving​

      • 10 hours nighttime

      • 5 hours bad weather

  

7) If you don’t pass

  • wait one day and retake the test
